The Blessing
In Hebrew culture receiving a blessing from the father was extremely important to the child. Genesis shows Hebrew fathers blessing their children. Esau wept bitterly when Jacob robbed him of his blessing (Genesis 27). It was important.
In a similar fashion it is important for parents to extend blessing to their children today. Certainly, rebuke is necessary as we bring them up (1st Kings 1:5-6) but so are words of affirmation. Even God told His Son, “This is my beloved Son in whom I am well pleased” (Mt. 3:17).
Do you have faithful children who are now rearing their children in the ways of the Lord? Tell them how pleased you are.
Have your children done very well in some area recently and you have failed to take notice? Tell them they are making you very proud.
Do you have a child that is unfaithful to God at the present time? Tell them again how special they are to you and continue to pray.
You might even write your own modern-day blessing to them as they embark upon a new phase in life. However you do it, they need your blessing. It’s important.
